Where does coal come from?
Coal seams lies underground, sometimes at great depths. To get it to the surface, people dig mines.
How was coal formed?
From the deposits of giant trees that grew many millions of years ago and crushed by layers of earth and ash. Over time, the layers were compressed, and the trees turned into coal.
Coal today
Many chemical products are made from coal, such as perfumes, dyes, and plastics. In thermal power plants, burning coal produces electricity. As a source of energy, coal is second only to one mineral - oil. Even 100 years ago, coal was the main source of energy for humanity. Coal fireboxes heated the water in a steam engine, and the steam turned the wheels of the engine. The steamboat also worked.
Oil
Gasoline for cars, fuel oil for central heating of houses, bitumen for asphalting roads, plastics for the car body - all this is obtained from oil.
How is oil extracted?
The origin of oil is very similar to the origin of coal. In some places of the Earth, the remains of plants and animals, squeezed by layers of earth and stones, were transformed into a combustible oily liquid of black color. To deliver this fuel to the surface, you need to drill a deep well, sometimes even at the bottom of the sea. Then oil is pumped into an oil pipeline - a pipe that delivers “black gold” to a port or to an oil refinery.Oil fields are very rare, therefore, in order to transport oil to different countries, oil-loading vessels called tankers are used.
